{"id":5819,"date":"2026-06-07T15:32:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T13:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staugustinebrixton.co.za\/wp\/?p=5819"},"modified":"2026-06-07T15:32:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T13:32:15","slug":"loving-the-outcast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staugustinebrixton.co.za\/wp\/2026\/06\/07\/loving-the-outcast\/","title":{"rendered":"Loving the outcast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s lesson looked at how Jesus loved the \u201coutcasts\u201d of the society at that time, and how he encourages us to also love the outcasts of our modern society.&nbsp; In biblical times outcasts were people excluded from mainstream religious, economic, and social life for various reasons.&nbsp; Outcasts included\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The sick and \u201cunclean\u201d<\/strong>: People with chronic skin diseases (often translated as \u201cleprosy\u201d) were prevented from entering towns.\u00a0 People with physical disabilities or bodily discharges were barred from entering the temple.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Occupational outcasts<\/strong>: Tax collectors were despised because they were seen as traitors who collaborated with the Roman Empire and who often extorted money from their own people. Shepherds were also viewed with deep suspicion and were frequently barred from formal religious life due to a reputation for dishonesty.\u00a0 I did not know this before preparing the lesson.\u00a0 It is therefore especially significant that Jesus\u2019 birth was first announced to shepherds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social and vulnerable classes<\/strong>: Widows and orphans lacked legal protection, economic independence, and social standing in a patriarchal society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Foreigners<\/strong>: Non-Jews or foreigners living in Israel (like the Samaritans) were marginalized and socially avoided.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201cSinners\u201d and moral outcasts<\/strong>: Prostitutes, the uneducated, and anyone whose lifestyle violated the strict legalism of the religious elite were branded as outcasts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus openly interacted with all these groups of people (which really annoyed the religious leaders).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson asked the children to name all the people they do not like.
